This seemed to work for me after I disconnected from my router and reconnected again.
However, you may have to go into "view wireless networks", and then choose "change order of preferred networks" in left corner of screen.
After this remove your router from preferred networks list. I had this problem on a laptop (lenovo) which i reinstalled xp on.

However, it didnt work, until I disconnected, turned the power off my Wi Fi, unchecked the tab in the authenticate dialog box, clicked ok, then switched the Wi Fi power back on, and reconnected.I have a laptop with a Dell D630 with Wi Fi power switch on the side.Because I have a switch to disable the Wifi power, this seemed easier/safer, and it worked. thanks, Solution: remove whatever "preferred networks" are displayed in wireless netwok card's property page, n click ok. happens when u switch to a new router or use a new different SSID.Then when all was lost I thought as "asdfsadf" did.To resolve i went to the manufacturer site and downloaded the latest drivers for the wireless card, and any other drivers i could. I had the same problem with a toshiba satellite p30 running windows xp pro sp3 with an atheros 5004x wireless card.
I tried every solution I could find on the net but nothing worked.
